Painted Brick House Makeover

I’m pretty excited to be sharing this post with you guys today. Last year, we moved into our new little ranch home out in the country and we haven’t looked back since. The house was built the same year that I was in the 80’s and the previous owner was an older gentleman that did his best to make some upgrades to the house, but it wasn’t truly our style.

So over the summer and into the fall we got to work hard on getting some of the outside updates made and this winter we intend to finish painting the inside. Today I wanted to show you our Painted Brick House Makeover and the dramatic difference a little paint can make to updating your home’s exterior!! I hope you like – we love our brick exterior and new curb appeal!

new house

This was what the listing for our house looked like this time last year. A little ranch home, pea green stucco, with darker pea green shutters. The previous owner painted the house this color before the house was listed…apparently they were from Florida and liked the green look. We, however, did not. Here’s what the house looks like today! Don’t you love the exterior brick with a great paint job?!

So as you can see…we did some MAJOR painting and landscaping changes to the house. Some people may or may not necessarily like what we did. Some people hate painted brick…some people like a lot of landscaping. We are neither of those groups. I like simple, manageable landscaping and I like bright, clean colors and lines on a house. We thought of doing a brighter exterior paint color – but ultimately went with the white painted brick, black shutters and the light grey with some white trim!

For this project, we used three paint colors and we used Sherwin Williams HGTV Exterior Matte Paint for the project.

We used Sherwin Williams Alabaster White for the brick. Do you like it? Then, Sherwin Williams Steely Gray for the lighter gray color. Finally, we used Sherwin Williams Extra White for the Trim. And we used Sherwin Williams Peppercorn for the shutters, front door, and fence.

The Alabaster white is a great, creamy white color that set off the trim just enough to make it noticeable. If you want that whitewash look, this color is great for brick paint and DIY projects. The Steely Gray had more blue in it than we anticipated, but it’s kind of fun because it changes colors and hues throughout the day. In full sunlight it looks very blue, but before sunset it’s very gray. In hindsight, I would have chosen a more true gray for the house, but we opted to stick with it rather than repaint the front garage area. The exterior design looks good overall.

Let’s check out some more before and after shots…cause they’re FUN! 😉

When summer started the landscaping came in like this…yikes.

You could barely make it through, so we got rid of it ALL of the old brick and started over.

Then towards the end of summer we started painting….and here’s where we are today! We love our new style home – especially with the majority of the house white with black trim shutters!

Next up…the back of the house. I wish I had taken better before photos, but here’s the general idea based off how last years photos looked…

We still need to paint the bottom of our deck, but that will likely take place next spring. It’ll be dark peppercorn, the same color as the shutters.

The whole house is completely different now. I’m sure if the previous owners drove by, they’d probably be having a heart attack at the drastic changes we have made. Our neighbors nearby and far down the road have stopped us outside to tell us how great the house looks, so we’re really pleased. We still have some more work to do next spring on two unseen sides of the house, but for now, we’re at a really good place with our exterior.

What do you think? Love or hate painted brick? It felt so good to paint the brick wall with some white paint and get it over with. As a homeowner, I can focus on the interior design since the exterior makeover is complete! What do you think about our brick home makeover?

This project took us about 5-6 solid weekends of painting with two men painting, my dad and husband, in order to accomplish. The brick took THREE coats of paint! GAH! I hope you liked this tutorial and can incorporate it into your home makeover – whether you decide to paint over a brick fireplace or go with another brick color! We love our exterior house look now – no more red brick!

I love what you have done with most of the house and yard. The green was rather awful wasn’t it? I wouldn’t have painted over the brick, but that’s just me. Overall, great job.

The green was rather awful, now that you mention it! LOL Yeah…the painted brick was a tough choice. I appreciate you stating your opinion in a kind and positive way. It’s very refreshing. Thanks for stopping by!

I actually liked the pea green myself instead of the grey. That’s just my personal preference because, to me, grey is a cold and dreary color. I won’t even buy a car with a grey interior because of that reason. Love how you remade the gazebo though. Even the grey on it was an improvement. I probably would have left the brick as they were also. The main thing I would have changed would have been the gazebo and the foliage in front, maybe thinned it out and planted colorful flowers. Just my opinion.

Yep, some people liked the green 🙂 We weren’t one of them though LOL. I’m a big gray fan, I feel like it’s really pretty and airy, so it worked well for us. Thanks for your comments! xoxo

Did you have to prep the grout between the bricks? I am planning to paint my house too.
